Most people familiar with FOUNDATION fieldbus know that fieldbus H1 segments require conditionedpower and terminators to operate properly. Power conditioners provide isolation

between the DC power supply and fieldbus devices so they may communicate with the host and with each other.

Terminators are required at both ends of the fieldbus cable to prevent distortion of thedigital signal.

From a systems perspective, power conditioning and termination might be considered external to the host system and purchased separately. After all, several companies offer excellent power conditioning and termination products that can be added to the host system.

Customers, however, expect process automation system suppliers like Honeywell to integrate these capabilities into their fieldbus offering.

The Honeywell Experion™ Process Knowledge System (PKS™) redundant fieldbus solution

leads the way by integrating power-conditioning Remote Termination Panel (RTP) products.

These products have been developed by Honeywell suppliers,MTL-Relcom and Pepperl+Fuchs. Integrating power conditioning and termination products with the host system provides an overall

cost advantage by saving space and eliminating the need to purchase the products separately.

The F650A Redundant Fieldbus Power System (FPSSeries) from MTL-Relcom provides redundant fieldbus power conditioners for the Experion PKS Fieldbus Interface Module(FIM). It supports two H1 fieldbus segments and connections to a redundant FIM pair. TheDIN-rail or panel-mounted system is fully “hot-swappable,” meaning that individual power conditioning modules and input power supplies can be replaced without interruption of power or communication on the fieldbus segment.

The F650A includes two FPSIPM plug-in power modules for each of the fieldbus segments.

These modules function as power conditioners to provide impedance between the input DC power supply and the fieldbus.

One fieldbus segment terminator is permanently connected in each segment. Power for both segments is common and derived from two diode ORed sets of connections, allowing redundant bulk power supplies to be used. The power inputs are galvanically isolated from the fieldbus circuitry via the IPM modules. An alarm circuit provides warning to the FIM (which shows up as a link power alarm) in case of a power conditioning module or input power supply failure. The alarm circuitry is housed in a separate, removable module that plugs onto the backplane. LEDs on the alarm and power conditioner modules assist with troubleshooting.

The FPS-IPM has been registered to the new FF- 831 power conditioner interoperability test specification.

The Pepperl+Fuchs FieldConnex™ Power Honeywell Experion PKS FIM also supports two H1 fieldbus segments and connects to a redundant FIM pair for complete system redundancy. It is available in either panel or DIN-rail mounted versions. It supplies up to one amp of current to

each fieldbus segment through on-board Fieldbus Power Conditioner (FPC) modules, which use high-reliability, passive components for each of two fieldbus networks. The system allows for redundant power connections and alarming to the FIM in the event of power connection loss or improper bus voltage level. In addition, circuit protection fuses are provided for each link, and loss of either fuse elicits an alarm. Each FPC has a built-in selectable terminator.

This terminator provides the necessary termination impedance for the fieldbus segment and can be switched off if appropriate terminators are present.

Teaming with Honeywell suppliers, MTL-Relcom and Pepperl+Fuchs, enables Honeywell to offer cost-effective, system-integrated conditioning and termination capabilities that deliver optimum performance of fieldbus segments.
